When Andrea Mummert finished her shift at the Hanover Petco on Saturday, she looked a bit different than she had when she clocked in that morning.

Mummert made the decision to shave her head if she met her personal goal of raising $2,500 for the store's annual fundraiser to benefit the Petco Foundation and Cat Tails, a Gettysburg-based rescue. Mummert raised $2,836 between Black Friday and Christmas Eve by getting customers to donate money for the campaign during her shifts. In all, the store raised $6,400, she said.

In the afternoon of Mummert's Saturday shift, she was surrounded by co-workers and family as they took turns shaving her head with purple electric clippers.

Mummert credits much of her success to Sutherland, who encouraged her friends to go to the store to donate. This year was Mummert's first year raising more than $2,500.

"For me, this is my biggest accomplishment ever," she said. "I just want people to know there's animals in shelters that can be adopted and be saved."

Five years ago, Mummert shaved her head after meeting her personal goal for the same fundraiser. This year, she decided to do it again. Her hair was long enough to donate to Locks of Love, a charity that makes African American Wigs for children suffering from long-term hair loss. Sutherland decided to take the plunge out of support for her friend, even though her hair was too short to donate.
