We supply a range of robust and hard-wearing Low to Medium Voltage armoured cables power cables for the supply of mains electricity. These are available with Steel Wire Armour (SWA) and Aluminium Wire Armour (AWA). The armour provides additional protection, allowing it to be used directly in higher climatic and mechanical stress environments such as direct burial, outdoors, or underground. The armour also enables the cable to withstand higher pulling loads.
Armoured cables are often referred to as SWA cables, mains cable, power cable and booklet armoured cable. Typically, the construction of an armoured cable comprises five components below:
Conductor: plain stranded copper or aluminium
Insulation: a crossed-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation provides thermal stability, good water resistant qualities and excellent electrical properties.
Bedding: polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is employed in order to create a protective barrier between the inner and outer layers of the cable.
Armour: a steel or aluminium armour provides mechanical protection to allow the cable to withstand the mechanical stresses to which it is exposed.
Sheath: the constituent parts of the cable are held together in a black PVC sheath offering a further level of protection. Black sheaths can be carbon loaded for UV stability.
The construction of our wide range of armoured cables varies according to their intended applications and may also include additional protective screens and materials. We offer a comprehensive range of BASEC-approved armoured cables, manufactured in accordance with a number of British, European and International Standards including BS5467, BS6622, BS6724, BS7835, BS EN 50267 and IEC 60502.
Eland Cables’ range of armoured cables are available with a Copper (Cu) or Aluminium (AI) conductor and with a PVC or Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) sheathing. LSZH sheathings are recommended for use in high density, enclosed areas, and are mandatory in some cases such as on the London Underground transportation network where it is essential to protect the public against harmful smoke and fumes in the event of a fire.
